installation and performance

at the site of the screen (2021)

performed in collaboration with the TaPIR Lab at the University of Toronto

at the site of the screen stages the affective economies that occur between and across bodies of technology, particularly our computer screens. what would it mean to be kind to these interfaces, a radical intimacy that works against discourse reproducing the binary humans vs. machines?

the cyborg duets (2020-2021)

in collaboration with Liana Kleinman, Joyce To, Jasmine Tsui, and Joelle Santiago

the cyborg duets attempt to understand the co-constitutive encounter at the site of the computer monitor. While I call this series a collection of “duets”, we could also think of the “solos” and even “trios”; they explore the space between my fingers and my keyboard, as well as the space between me and you.

xkeyscore (2019)

in collaboration with Robert Fleitz

performed at the MISE-EN PLACE’s Bushwick Open Studios

xkeyscore is a game piece that meditates on the profound auto-surveillance in performing selfhood that has materialized with the emergence of the Internet. It  consists of four dancers looking upon their own computer screens, each playing short clips of dance gestures sourced from music videos. From these gestures, the dancers construct a choreography they are meant to teach one another by the end of the piece while an algorithm that controls all four computers provides obstacles to prevent this process from taking place (forcing a dancer to close their eyes, to stop moving, to lie down, to turn around, etc). the piece was originally premiered by my amazing friends Liana Kleinman, Can Wang, Jasminn Johnson, and Claire Fleitz.

you can watch a reel of the piece here.

what makes a lovely party (2019)

performed at PROMPTUS IV and 7MPR Fourth Midnight

what makes a lovely party considers the (often absurd) rituals and traditions related to the cocktail party. based on a 1950s tutorial video called “what makes a lovely party?" originally performed by the brilliant Liana Kleinman, Darian Thomas, and Emma Pfitzer Price.
